Internal migration in the Sudan

Darfur has been a very important topic in world politics in the past few years and migration has been a central part of this with huge numbers of people moving from the regions of conflict to the more urbanised core of the country. A simplified account of the conflict is that the government have tried to resolve a conflict between the Arabic comunity and the Black African tribes by simplifying it into two more distinct sides and siding with the Arabic comunity to end the conflict quicker.

Gender bias in India and China

Traditionally, countries suchn as India and China have a gendias bias towards male children. There is a pattern in these countries that, because of the way that the culture requires women to leave their family and join the family of their husband, male children are preffered to garantee that the parents will be supported in old age.
In India, not only do families give away their daughters, but they have to pay a dowry to the family of the husband, which costs them even more money. However, in China, its the family of the husband which pay the dowry which is negotiated before the wedding. The fact that daughters are considered a 'burden' on their parents means that families will often only educated sons; this sends the situation into a vicous cycle where a women cannot get a job and support herself without a husband, making daughters even less preferable.
Areas in the north of India such as Uttah Pradesh often tend to be more traditional and therefore have a greater gender bias. This has slowed the development of the areas, making it poorer than areas in the more developed south. Again this has becom a vicious cicle because this lack of development has fed back to inhiberting any improvement to gender equality in the area.

How does gender affect development?

You would have thought that the UK would have equal rights between men and women but if you look closely you can still see a huge laps in equalities?

As you can see from the graph, the UK has an above average pay gap based on gender (20% compared to the european average of 15%)which shows that within the work place and in industries in the UK there are still discrimination against women such as with pay, working hours and recruitment which is halting the countries development. Follow the link below and you can see the dramatic statistics proving this such as on average, women will earn £330,000 less than men during their working lives.
